Newtown Lightning U15 baseball team summer league game highlights from this past week are as follows:

Playoffs

Pomperaug 9, Newtown Lightning 5: Tied 4-4 after three innings in a game suspended by rain Sunday at Fairfield Hills Field, the game resumed on Monday and Pomperaug scored two quick runs and went on to eliminate Newtown from the summer league playoffs. The Lightning was led by Anthony Maki, who knocked in two runs with a single and a sacrifice fly. Teammate Parker Lintz drove in two runs with a line drive single to right center, Ryan O’Keefe slapped an RBI single and John Hampford reached safely in every at-bat with a single and three walks. It extended Hampford’s streak of reaching base safely to seven consecutive plate appearances. Lightning first baseman Ben Stoller made the game’s best defensive play, backhanding a sizzling line drive in mid-air and stepping on the base for a double play. 

Regular-Season Games

Newtown Lightning 12, Wilton 5: The Lightning jumped out to a 9-2 lead after three innings and stopped stealing to avoid the mercy rule at Fairfield Hills Field last week. Newtown’s Kyler Harmeling knocked in three runs. Greg Frattaroli drove in two and Ben Stoller, Anthony Maki and Nicky Sajovic each had one RBI. Harmeling, Alex Saviano and Cole Baldino each had two singles. Harmeling pitched three innings, yielding just one run. Second baseman Stoller made the top defensive play, diving head-first to catch a short pop fly behind the mound.

Aspetuck 10, Lightning 1: Aspetuck’s Mike Loder smacked a grand-slam home run in the second inning to lead his team to an easy victory at Redding’s Boys & Girls Club Field last week. The Lightning had four hits: doubles by John Hampford and Cole Baldino, and singles by Ryan O’Keefe and Nicky Sajovic. Hampford reached base in every at-bat, also walking and getting hit by a pitch. Second baseman O’Keefe made the top defensive play, short-circuiting a first-inning Aspetuck rally with the bases loaded. O’Keefe grabbed a groundball, made a nice tag on a base runner trying to avoid the tag and threw to first baseman Ben Stoller for a double play. Parker Lintz came on in relief to stifle the hot-hitting Aspetuck team with three shutout innings.
