BETHEL – The Newtown Babe Ruth 15-year-old All Stars defeated Fairfield, 5-4, to capture the Bethel Jimmy Fund Tournament championship. Mark Fracker tripled, doubled, pitched well and was named Most Valuable Player as Newtown defeated Fairfield for the second time in the tournament.

Tyler Hull had a pair of hits in the win.

Newtown beat Fairfield, 10-8, to advance to the finals. Fairfield was bumped into the loser’s bracker of the double-elimination tournament and had to beat Milford to earn a spot in the championship.

Earlier in the tournament, Newtown defeated Monroe (11-2) and Aspetuck (11-5).

This is the 28th year of the Jimmy Fund Tournament and it is the first time since 1979 that Newtown reached the finals. That year, Newtown defeated Ridgefield for the tournament championship.

Oddly enough, back in 1979 just $600 was collected to help The Jimmy Fund in its cancer research. This time, 22 years later, $10,650 was raised.
