In conjunction with the construction of a new ambulance garage at Fairfield Hills for the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, a section of Wasserman Way will be closed to through-traffic for an estimated nine-hour period from the night of Sunday, August 10, until the morning of Monday, August 11, officials said.

Town Director of Public Works Fred Hurley said August 5 that the firm constructing the ambulance garage will install a 30-inch diameter storm sewer line below Wasserman Way to replace an existing smaller-diameter storm sewer line there, requiring the road closure.

Work crews will dig a 14-foot-deep trench to install the sewer line. The trench will be dug across the width of Wasserman Way, east of its intersection with Mile Hill Road South.

The section of Wasserman Way near the trenching will be closed to traffic from 9 pm on Sunday until 6 am on Monday. If inclement weather postpones the project, the work would be done one day later, from 9 pm on Monday until 6 am on Tuesday, Mr Hurley said.

Shrouded detour signs will be positioned on local roads and then uncovered to direct motorists when the construction work starts, he said.

On Interstate 84, electronic message signs will be positioned to keep I-84 drivers, especially those driving tractor-trailer trucks, away from Wasserman Way during the construction period.

Those electronic signs will be placed on westbound I-84, east of Exit 11, and also on eastbound I-84, west of Exit 10. The electronic signs will flash messages telling I-84 motorists who are seeking to reach north/south Route 25 that they should use Exit 10 and travel via Church Hill Road to Route 25.

Mr Hurley said that Wasserman Way would remain open to local traffic, as much as possible, while the construction work is underway.

Construction on the new heardquarters for Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps started in 2013. The $4.5-million emergency medical service facility will have access to Wasserman Way across that street from Reed Intermediate School.

The 14,500-square-foot headquarters will have instructional space. The building will include individual crew-member bunk rooms, office space for the the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Association executive board, and three double-length garage bays.
