'Guys And Dolls' At The Abbey
âGuys And Dollsâ At The Abbey
BETHLEHEM â The Gary-The Olivia Performing Arts Center of the Abbey of Regina Laudis will present nine performances of the Frank Loesser Tony Award winning musical Guys and Dolls this month.
Performances are scheduled for 7:30 pm August 6-7 and 14-17, and matinees are planned for 2:30 pm on Sundays, August 8 and 15. Performances take place at the theater, at the Abbey, 273 Flanders Road.
With music and lyrics by Frank Loesser, and based on Damon Runyonâs short story entitled The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown, Guys and Dolls opened on Broadway in 1950 to an exceptional run of 1,200 performances, leading to several Broadway revivals and London West End productions, as well as a 1955 film, starring Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons, Frank Sinatra and Vivian Blaine. The musical has received the highest accolades, including five Tony Awards in its premier Broadway run, among them Best Musical, Best Director, Best Choreography, as well as a Tony for Best Revival of a Musical in 1992.
Described in the original programme as a âfable of Broadwayâ, the vivid characters include Sarah Brown, the Salvation Army Mission reformer; Sky Masterson, the slick, high-rolling gambler; Adelaide, a nightclub performer; and Nathan Detroit, her devoted fiancée, always lured away from marrying her by his gambling fever.
The Gary-The Olivia Theater production features a cast of veteran performers and newcomers. Directed by Sally and Thomas Camm and choreographed by Sally Camm, the musical director for this production is Craig Hartley.
General admission is $17.
