Snapshot: Pete Barresi
Occupation: I am an aircraft maintenance manager and crew chief. I work on private jets out of Oxford. I have been doing that for 20 years. I love it. It's a very interesting career. I've traveled a lot. My last client I traveled the world with. [I went to] some places that even if I were to want to travel I would have never gotten to.
Family: My wife, Heather, and I just had our 15-year anniversary. We've know each other for 16 years. My oldest son is now 9, and my middle is 5 going on 6, and our youngest daughter, who we adopted, is now 4.
Pets: We have two dogs. We just got a rescue dog named Levi, and he is a 3-year-old Catahoula. He was from one of the rescue groups at Catherine's Butterfly Party this year. We have our 3-year-old Nordic golden retriever named Hope. We lost our last dog, Jasmine, on December 13, 2012. We went back to our breeder, and Hope definitely was the right dog. Both dogs get along and have a great dynamic, which is fun to watch.
How long have you lived in Newtown? Thirty-eight years. My parents built their house here in the 70s, and I grew up here. My wife and I did have to live in some other towns before we could afford this town. Especially after living there, we realized how good my childhood had been here. We felt it was really important that our kids get that opportunity, so we moved back to rent in Newtown in 2007. We bought our house in 2009.
What do you like to do in your free time? I am a volunteer firefighter for Sandy Hook. I joined when I was 16 and did seven years the first time. This time I have been back since 2011. When I moved back from Florida a good friend of mine was a member, and he encouraged me to join. It was a great thing to do, it kept me out of trouble, and gave me a lot of life experience. It was more for me than it was for the community at the time. It turned out to be a labor of love. I really enjoy it; I love the people and the family environment. It is a big organization, and we do a lot of good. Also, my grandfather was the president of Trumbull Center Volunteer Fire Department.
Do you have a favorite book? I have two favorites: Running North by Ann Mariah Cook and Patriots, which is a book written with all of John Adams's daily notes. It was his journal of all the Founding Fathers and events that came from there.
Do you have a favorite travel destination? I love Savannah, Ga. I used to travel there for business at least two or three times a year. It's an old Southern town that has a lot of history - a lot of antique architecture.
What is the best thing about Newtown? The small town feeling that you still get. The ruralness; even though we are so close to so many cities, we have a lot of very close amenities.
Who has been the greatest influence in your life? One of them was my fourth and fifth grade teacher, George Stockwell. I still talk to him to this day. Also, [Ronald] Reagan was a huge influence. I look back now and know I had a truly blessed childhood, because I was in the right age. We had family vacations constantly and drove everywhere from skiing in Vermont to visiting family in North Carolina or going to Disney World.
If you could spend the day with anyone who would you choose and why? Clint Eastwood would be a great guy to spend the day with. His insight, his experience, and his attitude towards success would make him a great person to tap into his knowledge for the day.
What is your guilty pleasure? An Irish coffee with Jameson and whipped cream.
