August Love & Knishes Lunch Programs

SOUTHBURY — Each Wednesday throughout August, all area adults age 60 and better are invited to enjoy the Love & Knishes Lunch, which takes place at noon in the Jewish Federation’s social hall at 444 Main Street North.

On August 10, pianist Roger Young makes the room sizzle with tunes by George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Scott Joplin, some short classical pieces and special requests.

The August 17 lunch features four Southbury musicians: the talented piano-flute trio of Jenny, Dennis, and Dereck Li along with Helen Falcone, mezzo-soprano, in a program of light classics, Broadway tunes, and contemporary pieces.

Award-winning writer, educator, and peace activist Dr Gerald Brooker appears on August 24 to talk about his latest book, Oh Jerusalem, My Heart Yearns for Thee. This tale about a young couple who survive the Holocaust and journey to Israel is a story with an historical foundation based on the author’s research and personal visits. Books will be for sale after the talk.

On August 31, Jeremy Alston, Ethel’s Kaufman’s drummer, goes solo, playing piano and singing old standards, some country music and hits from the 1950s.

Lunch is prepared by Jordan Caterers of Cheshire, rated Connecticut Magazine’s Best Caterer for the past 11 years. Reservations are requested by noon on the Monday before each program, and the suggested lunch donation is $7.50 for adults age 60 and better and $9.50 for those under 60. To RSVP, call Debby Horowitz, Brownstein Jewish Family Service director, at 203-267-3177, extension 3.
