What’s Hot In Back To School Fashions

By Susan coney

While heading back to school at the end of August may not seem too exciting, kids always seem to perk up at the prospect of shopping for new clothes. It just feels good to know that you look cool, hip, or awesome when you return to school in the fall.

Newtown children’s clothing store Magic Garden located on Queen Street offers a wide array of younger children’s clothes ranging in size from newborn to 16. Owner Nancy Kost was on hand to offer up what’s hot for the younger crowd this fall.

“Lots of color, especially pink. For girls there are nice blazers and skorts, which are more practical for the playground. Tie dye and denim are always popular for both boys and girls,” Ms Kost stated. “Boys seem to be more into comfort. Fleece lined microfiber pull-on athletic pants, hooded flannel shirts, and sweatshirts,” she said. The Magic Garden also offers a nice selection of holiday fashions as well as christening wear and first communion attire.

Style, at 85 South Main Street, is a boutique clothing and accessory store that features clothing for girls starting at a children’s size 6 up through junior and women’s sizes. The eclectic store co-owned by Karen Bauer and Joan Zaccaro carries piles of basic T-shirts, purses, belts, scarves, socks, jewelry and flip flops and display racks of clothing. The shop supplies customers with a full range of opitons from casual wear and denim to black tie.

“Colors for fall are cranberry, amethyst, teal blue, and purple. As always varying shades of pink are popular. Pink is a fun fashion, it’s flirty, and everyone always looks good in pink,” Ms Zaccaro said. She went on to say that this fall we should expect to see the traditional New England garb of corduroy pants, blazers, skirts, and jackets as well as lots of wooly sweaters and always denim. “Surefire staples are great jeans, T-shirts, and sweaters. This fall the preppy styles from the 70s and 80s are returning with an updated look,” Ms Zaccaro stated.

“We are carrying lots of ethnic style tunics and tops. Lots of sparkle, glitter, and beads but in a casual, not overdone way,” said Ms Bauer. “We want to establish ourselves as a store for Newtown. Not only do we offer clothes and accessories for juniors, we offer transitional clothes for moms as well. Also we carry many gift items in the way of accessories and offer gift wrap and a card at no charge,” Ms Bauer stressed.

When choosing back to school clothing, select a majority of basic “must haves” such as jeans, sweaters, and T-shirts to lay the foundation and then add the latest fad accessories to keep the look fresh and updated. Allowing a few fun, funky pieces can help to add interest to the wardrobe. Keep in mind everyone feels better about themselves when they feel they look their best.
