Church's Community Yard Sale Postponed
A community-wide tag sale being planned by members of Newtown Congregational Church for later this month has been postponed.
One of the event’s co-chairs this week told The Newtown Bee she and others are waiting until they all feel it is safe enough to hold such an event, even outdoors.
“I’ve been doing a lot of reading, and the COVID delta variant is spreading,” Linda Wiedenhamer said August 3. “It’s in Massachusetts, and I can’t believe it’s not going to make its way to us. So we are postponing, just to be safe.”
Wiedenhamer is hoping, she said, to be able to reschedule the August 14 event for late September or sometime in October.
“We will announce the new date as soon as we feel confident,” she said. “I’m hoping for a plateau, and fast drop in cases.”
Wiedenhamer is co-chairing the event with Marie Sturdevant.
The event is not a church fundraiser. There is no charge to participate, and the money made by each seller will be theirs to keep.
“Newtown Congregational Church has a long history of community involvement, using time, talent, and compassion to help others,” the co-chairs noted last month.
Sturdevant told The Newtown Bee last week that as of July 26 she and Weidenhamer had confirmed participation by Cornerstone, the Newtown Woman’s Club, Liberty at Newtown, the Newtown Lions Club, the Philanthropic Education Organization, and individuals. They had opened the event to any organizations, groups, businesses, families, or individuals who wanted to participate.
The co-chairs will begin accepting registrations once the new date for the community-wide yard sale is confirmed.
