Robert L. Berger, 93, of Westport, formerly of Newtown and Denver, Colo., died July 24 after a short illness. Mr Berger was born February 2, 1913 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of Harry and Gertrude Morley Berger. He was a direct descendant of Mayflower passenger Edward Fuller.
He is survived by four nieces, Wendy Berger Margules of Newtown, Lucia Berger Brooks of Weston, Linda Berger Freidrich of Sun Valley, Calif., and Cynthia Berger Williams of Bakersfield, Calif.; and two nephews, Craig Berger of Westport, and Edward Berger of Chandler, Ariz. He was predeceased by his two brothers, Morton Berger and Ralph Berger; and his niece, Kerrin Berger Newell.
Mr Berger received an associates degree in journalism from the University of Cincinnati. He spent his early professional career in commercial art, illustration, and photography. In the 1960s, he was a photography instructor at the Famous Photographers School in Westport, and later taught adult education classes in photography. Early in the 1980s, he became interested in computer operations and software and put his extensive knowledge to use teaching computer classes and working as assistant manager of Micro Bazaar, a retail computer store in Newtown. In the 1980s and 1990s, he was active as a volunteer with the Newtown Senior Center, writing and publishing its monthly newsletter and helping develop social programs.
A veteran, Mr Berger served in the US Army during World War II.
A service to celebrate his life will be held on Wednesday, August 9, at 6:30 p.m., at the Harding Funeral Home, 210 Post Road East, in Westport. Burial will be in Cincinnati, Ohio.
