Estate Planning, Probate,

And Jewish Law Seminar

SOUTHBURY — Brownstein Jewish Family Service is hosting a Legal Lunch & Learn program at noon on Tuesday, August 7 at the Jewish Federation, 444 Main Street North.

“Estate Planning Considerations and an Overview of the Probate Process” features attorneys Robert A, Scott and Dov Braunstein of Slavin Stauffacher & Scott, LLC. This free program includes an introduction to estate planning; special estate planning considerations for pet owners; an overview of the probate process; and Jewish laws of inheritance. There will also be ample time for a general question and answer session, not limited to issues discussed in the earlier topics.

In the Jewish law section of the program, Mr Braunstein will speak about some of the following issues:

(1) the order set forth under Biblical Law for distribution of assets, including the firstborn son’s right to take a double portion of the estate, and the rabbinically recognized methods for redistribution of assets so that all heirs take equal shares;

(2) whether Biblical Law recognizes an adoptive child as an heir to his/her adoptive parents;

(3) whether life insurance policies and joint accounts are subject to the Jewish laws of inheritance;

(4) disinheriting a Biblical heir; and

(5) Lifetime gifts as a method for redistribution of assets.

Mr Scott focuses his law practice in the areas of estate planning, probate and estate administration and litigation, conservatorships, and real estate. A graduate of the Western New England College School of Law, Mr Scott has been a member of the Watertown Rotary Club for the past 13 years, and is a former president and secretary of the club.

Mr Braunstein practices in the general areas of civil and commercial litigation, municipal law, real estate law, and probate and estate administration. A graduate of Fordham University School of Law, as well as a recipient of rabbinic ordination, Mr Braunstein has extensive knowledge of the Jewish laws of inheritance. Mr Braunstein serves on the Board of Directors of the Yeshiva K’tana of Waterbury.

A light lunch will be provided at this free program, but seating is limited and reservations must be made by August 2 to Debby Horowitz, Brownstein Jewish Family Service director, at 203-267-3177, extension 310.
