Second Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued Over Newtown And Region

The National Weather Service in Upton, N.Y., has issued a second Severe Thunderstorm Warning covering Newtown this afternoon. An earlier warning expired at 2:30 pm, and no rain or thunder arrived in town.

The second warning, for central Fairfield County and northwestern New Haven County is in effect until 5:30 pm EDT.

At 450 PM, a severe thunderstorm was located near Southbury, moving east at 15 mph.

Hazards include 60 mph wind gusts and quarter size hail.

Hail damage to vehicles is expected. Wind damage can also be expected to roofs, siding, and trees.

The weather service says the severe thunderstorm, which has been hovering around the region for much of the afternoon, will be near Southbury around 5:20 pm EDT, Seymour around 5:25 pm EDT, and Naugatuck and Hamden around 5:30 pm EDT.

The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch for Fairfield, Litchfield, New Haven, and Hartford Counties through 10 pm July 1.
