Red Tail Dancers Summer Social
Red Tail Dancers Summer Social
BSA Explorer Post 413, Red Tail Dancers of Newtown, sponsored by the Newtown United Methodist Church, held a summer social at Castle Hill Farm. Venture Crew 1890, Paumanauke Dancers, from Suffolk County Long Island; Venture Crew 182 Silver Hawk Dancers, from Nassau County, Long Island; Quinnipiac Dancers from the Order of the Arrow, Owaneco Lodge 313, Hamden, Conn.; and family members joined in the Native American dancing. Over 75 dancers lined up for the grand entry in the shadows of six tipis. Many types of regalia (costumes) were worn, and all were hand constructed by the many youths. There were dancers wearing Menâs Traditional, Modern Traditional, Grass Dance, and Fancy Dance, as well as Womenâs Traditional, Jingle, and Fancy Shawl. Dances included Intertribal, Scouting (also known as a Sneak-Up), Two Step, Welcoming (Round) Dance, Iroquois Duck Dance, a Fancy Trick song for the Fancy Shawl and Fancy Dancers. The eveningâs festivities ended with a traditional closing song. The dancers were then treated to a hayride around the farm. A good time was had by all that attended. Another social is in the planning for August.
What is an Explorer Post? (From the Boy Scout Exploring Post development guide.) A post is a group of young adults, male and female, ages 14 to 21, that have been brought together because of a common interest. This might take the form of social activities, avocation or hobby interests, and career exploration. A post is made up of people working and playing together, enjoying and learning from each other. A post and its people share common goals and basic ideals. They move together with the same purpose and commitment.
Explorer Post 413, Red Tail Dancersâ interest is Native American culture, both past and present, including art, crafts, dance, history, music, traditions, and current events. We meet every second and fourth Wednesday of the month in Newtown. Any youth, male or female, that is interested in an invitation to a meeting please contact Bob at 426-2725 or email to RedTailDancers@juno.com.
