NEW YORK, New York â If you feel like leaving the borders of Connecticut for a round of golf, why not head down to the Bronx in New York and shoot at round at the historic Van Cortlandt Golf Course.
Van Cortlandt, the oldest public golf course in America, is back open after an extensive $4 million renovation project (part of a $15 million plan to make improvements at eight New York City golf courses). Golf course architect Stephen Kay spearheaded the project at Van Cortlandt, which incl;uded the rebuilding and/or addition of 20 new tee boxes and 13 new bunkers, installation of two new lakes, and significant re-contouring of fairways and rough areas throughout the course.
Kay worked with AquaTurf, Inc., to complete the renovations.
In the July 2001 issue of Golf Digest, it was stated, âAs for conditioning, New Yorkâs venerable Van Cortlandt Park isnât tour caliber, but $4 million in renovations will make it the Big Appleâs gem.â
The course â along with seven others in the city â is managed by American Golf. Last year, the company began its renovations will a new pro shop and installation of new amenity stations throughout the course.
Van Cortlandt was originally designed by Tom Bendelow in 1895. Currently, it is a par-70, 6,122-yard layout that ranges from flat, links-like terrain to mountain-like holes with beautiful views of the surrounding Riverdale area. Highlights of the course include tight fairways, several water hazards, and two par fives which measure better than 600 yards.
Van Cortlandt is located off the Major Deegan Expressway on South & Bailey Avenue in the Bronx. Want to stop down for a round? Then call 1-718-543-4595 for tee times.
