Father And Daughter Arrested In Electronics Theft Case
Newtown police said that a father and daughter turned themselves over to them on July 28 after learning that police held warrants for their arrest, after which they were both charged with multiple felonies in connection with their alleged theft of goods from a local electronic components firm.
Charged in the case are Robert Lingl, 57, of Coconut Creek, Fla., and his daughter Bethany Lingl, 21, of Naugatuck, police said.
The victim in the case is SMT Corp of 14 High Bridge Road, an electronic components firm, police said.
Police said they began an investigation in January after receiving a complaint from SMT about thefts from the firm. Both defendants were SMT employees when the thefts allegedly occurred, police said.
After executing several search-and-seizure warrants in Connecticut and Florida, arrest warrants were sought and received for the two people, police said.
The thefts occurred during a period of several years, involving items which were owned by SMT, police said.
The total dollar value of the loss has not yet been determined, but it is estimated to be in the "tens of thousands of dollars," according to police.
Police said they arrested Robert Lingl on one count of first-degree larceny, one count of conspiracy to commit first-degree larceny, four counts of third-degree larceny, and one count of criminal attempt to commit third-degree larceny.
After processing, he posted $50,000 bail and was released for an August 11 arraignment on the charges in Danbury Superior Court.
Police said they arrested Bethany Lingl on one count of first-degree larceny, one count of conspiracy to commit first-degree larceny, and one count of criminal attempt to commit third-degree larceny.
Police held her on $15,000 bail for a court arraignment. Bethany Lingl pleaded not guilty to the three felonies, was then released on $5,000 bail, and is scheduled to return to court on August 11.
