SMART Camp Gives Children Platform To Explore All Creative Mediums
Throughout Head O' Meadow Elementary School, Newtown Continuing Education's SMART (Summer Music and Art) Camp continued its second session of classes from July 16 to 27.
The program was led by SMART Camp Program Director Stephanie Cardwell, along with a staff of professional artists and instructors.
Lynn Welsh taught students grades third through sixth about art in Drawing and Painting Exploration. On Wednesday, she pulled up examples of French post-impressionist painter Henri Rousseau's jungle and botanical garden art for the children to study and use as inspiration for their own work.
In the neighboring classroom, instructor Samantha Pierce led a class called A Field Guide To Animals for kindergarten through third grade students. For one of the projects, children used their imaginations to create a drawing of woods and decorated it with different animal tracks using stamps.
Over in the Fused Glass class, Kelly Makuch used her expertise in kiln-formed glass to educate kindergarten through sixth grade students about how they can make customized pieces of art with glass. Students made a variety of items, including colorful wind chimes and monster magnets.
Across the hallway was instructor Cathy Hydeck's Jewelry Design class for grades kindergarten through sixth. Students explored different styles of jewelry and made customized pieces like beaded necklaces, key chains, and bubble wands.
Each student was able to take home the creations to enjoy and show their loved ones what they did at SMART Camp this summer.
