The Energy Price Quick Fix
The Energy Price
Quick Fix
To the Editor:
In response to the editorial âThe Energy Price Sideshow,â yes â we need to address rising energy costs. But I agree that a reduction in the gas tax is little more than a feel-good sideshow. Weâll save a few pennies a gallon (until crude oil prices rise again in a few days) while taking away funds needed to repair and expand our train system. On Wednesday, July 19, the heat took its toll on the aging Metro North line, forcing train cancellations. The last thing we need is forcing more people onto the roads.
Everyone, and especially politicians, wants a quick-fix to energy prices. Yet the fact of the matter is that there is no quick-fix to this global problem. The best way to cut energy costs isnât to play with taxes, but to start to aggressively reduce the amount of fossil fuels we use. Savings will come through conservation and efficiency, and by diversifying our energy supply through renewable alternatives â not by cutting funds for rail transportation. I applaud Governor Rellâs intentions, but are her policies truly wise? Are the other candidates any better?
