Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multi-Purpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of The Commission on Aging. The center is run by the Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Wal-Mart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

This Week’s Programs

*TAI CHI  & CHI KUNG will be offered on Tuesdays from 1 to 2 pm. Steve Kurimai will instruct the gentle arts of movement that promote mind-body connection, and improve balance, coordination and relaxation.

*BALLROOM DANCING class will continue on Thursdays from 4 to 5 pm. Cost is $7 per class or $28 for a four-week session. No partner is needed to take this class.

*The tax assessors office will offer a TAX ASSESSOR WORKSHOP on Wednesday, August 2, 10:30–11:30 am, and Thursday, August 31, 1–2 pm, to reevaluate your tax benefits. Bring your questions.

*Depart Thursday, August 3, at 7:45 from the Senior Center for Swansea, Mass. Have lunch at Venus DeMilo and listen to this award-winning show, IMMY STURR & HIS ORCHESTRA.. The cost is $80.

*The THREE-DAY TRIP, August 9–11, to Lancaster, Penn., is CANCELLED.

*REMINDERS:

*SWEET HART BUS — Call 748-2511 for reservations and 830-4399, their direct line, to go home so you don’t have to wait at doctor’s office. Also, Saturday service between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm for weekend appointments or shopping.

*ETHEL KAUFMAN will  lead a CHORUS GROUP on Mondays at 1 pm.

*Pat Babbage teaches EXERCISE classes on Monday and Wednesday mornings.

*HATHA YOGA classes are Monday and Thursday mornings at 10. Try a class with Helen Herbold.

 *Lynn Flanders is teaching COUNTRY-WESTERN LINE DANCING Tuesday mornings from 10:30 until 11:30.

*QUILTING CLASS meets on Fridays at 10 am.

*Call the Senior Center or stop for information or reservations for the various trips that are being offered. Come to the center for overnight trip booklets.

OVER NIGHT TRIPS

*A 5-DAY TRIP TO BRANSON, MO., is planned for September 18–22. Price per person is $1,179 single, $1,029 twin, $1,019 triple. Marilyn says it is a great trip. Come to the center for overnight trip booklets. 

*THREE-DAY TRIP, August 9–11. See the play Ruth, have an Amish dinner at Hershey Farm, a local tour of the chocolate capital Hershey, Penn., see The 2006 Summer Spectacular, visit the Choo Choo Barn, ride the Strasburg Railroad and more. The cost is $389 for double, $505, single, and $379, triple.

*CRUISE HAWAII on the New Pride of Aloha including two nights at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, September 1-10.

*MAINE RAIL & SAIL – A scenic train ride and Rockland Harbor cruise, September 26–28. The cost is $349 for double, $459, single, and $339, triple.

DAY TRIPS

*CRUISIN CALMLY ALONG. On August 23, depart at 8 am from the Senior Center to Holyoke, Mass., visit the Wistariahurst Museum, and have lunch at Delaney House. After lunch cruise the Connecticut River on the Lady Bea, sailing between Holyoke and Northampton.

*DATE CHANGE for Westchester Dinner Theater is Full Monty is changed from September 14 to October 26

Meals are subject to change.

Sandwich wraps are available on Friday. Call three days in advance to order. The cost is $2.

Monday, July 31: Sweet & sour boneless chicken served over brown rice, Oriental blend vegetables, whole wheat bread, pineapple tidbits;

Tuesday, August 1: Beef tips with onions and peppers, mashed potatoes, green beans, wheat dinner roll, melon slice;

Wednesday: Stuffed shells with marinara sauce, sausage, spinach salad with vinaigrette dressing, Italian bread, parmesan cheese, fruit sherbet;

Thursday: New Orleans style gumbo soup, unsalted crackers, seafood salad plate served on a bed of lettuce with sliced tomato and three bean salad, French dressing, Portuguese roll, seasonal fresh fruit.

Monday, August 7: Hot dogs on buns, baked beans, sauerkraut, marinated cucumber salad, mustard and ketchup, seasonal fresh fruit;

Tuesday, August 8: Butter crumb fish, tartar sauce, baked potato with sour cream, broccoli florettes, seedless rye bread, pistachio pudding with whipped topping.

Monday: AM pinochle, hatha yoga, exercise, PM chorus group;

Tuesday: AM pinochle, country-western line dancing, PM Tai Chi & Chi Kung, bowling (at Brookfield Lanes), crafts;

Wednesday: AM pinochle, exercise; PM bingo, crafts;

Thursday: AM Jimmy Sturr & His Orchestra, pinochle, hatha yoga, bowling, cards; PM: ballroom dancing

Friday: AM advanced mah jongg, sewing, quilting, PM knitting, cards.
