Neither Snow Nor Rain, But…

Stairs Will Keep Them From Their Rounds

Commerce Street Postmaster Paul Marciniak dispelled rumors Wednesday, July 26, that Borough and Main Street residents would be looking at curbside mail delivery in the near future. “It’s not true,” said Postmaster Marciniak.

“What we are asking is that when a house [in those areas that have door delivery] is vacated and a new owner comes in, that they move the mailbox off of the house. A lot of the stairs leading up to those homes do not have railings, and that makes it very treacherous [for postal delivery people].” The postmaster is requesting new owners to place the mailboxes below the stair level, but boxes will remain on the homeowner’s property and mail deliverers will still walk the routes.

“The postal philosophy is to make it the best mail delivery we can do,” Postmaster Marciniak said. “That would be through curbside delivery, but it is not feasible to have drive-up delivery in some places.” The post office delivers mail to businesses and residences in the Borough, Main Street, Church Hill Road, Queen Street, and parts of South Main Street that do not have curbside mounted boxes.

When new owners contact the post office for mail delivery, they will be notified of the rule, said Postmaster Marciniak. To date, he said, only one new owner had been advised of the new request.
