HARTFORD – High school basketball fans will no doubt remember Ridgefield being accused of deliberately taking it easy in its final boys basketball game of the 2005-06 regular season in order to drop down to Division II in time for the post-season.

The assumption being that Ridgefield would have had an easier time challenging for a state championship in Division II than Division I.

At the same time, Crosby High School in Waterbury was angry that it’s weak strength of schedule (playing in the Naugatuck Valley League) would keep it out of the Division I tournament, which the Bulldogs had won the year before.

Those concerns apparently have been addressed since the CIAC reportedly has overhauled its tournament format, abandoning the Division I, II, III and IV classifications for the standard Class LL, L, M and S classifications.

But there are a few wrinkles.

Schools are dropped into the separate classes based on enrollment, but for the boys enrollment figures will be factored a new way – with non-technical private schools (designated as “schools of choice”) having their enrollment figures basically doubled, such that a school with an enrollment of 200 would be designated as having an enrollment of 400.

Also, schools that have made repeated appearances in the tournament will have additional points added to its enrollment total. Semi-final appearances would account for 10 additional points while finals would account for 25 points and titles for 50 points. Schools can also bump up to Class LL is they so desire, except the application for that must be made by October 1.
