Gladys M. Eddy

Gladys M. Eddy, 89, died peacefully, with her family at her side, in her home in Newtown, July 19. She was born in Bridgeport, September 15, 1922, the daughter of Ruth and William Metzger.

Mrs Eddy was assistant town clerk for the Town of Newtown for 26 years, retiring in 1992.

Stylish and vivacious as a young woman, she loved dancing and big band music. Though she was the first to admit that her husband was “not the best dancer,” she was one of the lucky few to marry the love of her life. It was her fierce independence and self-reliant attitude, so familiar to those closest to her, that got her through the death of her husband, and raising two boys on her own.

Mrs Eddy loved being among her friends and family. She would gladly tell you that her favorite pastime was going out to lunch. Her easy sense of humor, good-natured attitude, and feisty spirit will be sadly missed by those who knew her. Ask anyone at town hall what he or she remembers about her, and they will say her smile.

Two sons and their wives, David and Mary of Newtown and Allen and Karen of Bridgewater; two granddaughters; and her cousin and lifelong friend, Shirley Kopnicky of Newtown, survive Mrs Eddy. Her loving husband Richard A. Eddy preceded her in death, December 22, 1970.

Calling hours will be held Friday, August 3, from 6 to 8 pm, at the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown. A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 4, at 11 am, at the Newtown Congregational Church, 14 West Street. A luncheon get-together in Mrs Eddy’s honor will take place immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Newtown Congregational Church, 14 West Street, Newtown CT 06470.
