Kindermusik Graduates Local Students

DANBURY — Kindermusik educator Bonnie V. Sommer recently awarded the certificate of completion to her graduating “Kindermusik for the Young Child” class. The certificate celebrates the completion of classes that met once a week for two full school years in a pressure-free environment, where the children had the chance to musically succeed before taking on more formal instruction. Through singing, movement and dance, and games, they learned symbols and vocabulary of music creation; developed instrument playing skills on the glockenspiel, dulcimer, and recorder; explored music around the world, music genres and styles; learned about some composers; and much more.

Ten first graders from surrounding towns completed the program. Pieter Martino of Newtown was one of them. In addition to certificates, gifts were given to each graduate at an end-of-the-year class celebration that included the children’s favorite musical games and dances, refreshments, and presentation of flowers to their parents.

Area kindergartners completed the first year of the two-year program. Danny Bittman and Tyler Coleman of Sandy Hook completed the first year of the program.

Kindermusik is a unique, age-appropriate program designed by early childhood specialists. Kindermusik reaches children ages newborn through seven years. Children in Kindermusik classes are encouraged to sing, dance, play simple instruments, and learn about music in a non-competitive environment. It instills a greater appreciation of music in children by teaching them the fundamentals in a fun atmosphere that promotes process, not performance-based learning.
