Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued For Fairfield County
UPDATE (July 25; 4:16 pm):ÃÂ From the National Weather Service: "The Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Fairfield, southern Middlesex, New Haven and central Westchester counties will expire at 415 PM EDT. The storms which prompted the warning have weakened. Therefore the warning will be allowed to expire.
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 800 PM EDT for southern Connecticut... and southeastern New York."
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch that had been issued by early afternoon Monday, July 25, by the National Weather Service (NWS) was upgraded at 3:09 pm to a Severe Thunderstorm Warning.
The weather service is predicting a storm to affect Fairfield County, Middlesex County and New Haven County, as well as Westchester County in southeastern New York.
At 3:08 pm, "severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from Brookfield to Danbury to Bedford to Hawthorne, moving east at 45 mph," the weather service announced.
Hazards of the storm may include 60 mph gusts. NWS indicates the storm may bring damage to roofs, siding and/or trees.
Severe thunderstorms will be near New Canaan, Newtown, Bethel, Wilton, Redding and Georgetown around 3:15, according to NWS.
Newtown Parks & Recreation Department cancelled its day camp program by 3:15, and asked that parents or guardians pick up campers as soon as possible.
The Thunderstorm Warning is in effect until 4:15 pm. Air Quality and Hazardous Weather Outlook advisories were also issued on Monday.
While the warning is scheduled to expire at 4:15, the Severe Thunderstorm Watch that had been issued earlier in the day will remain in effect until at least 8 pm. Winds in excess of 40 mphs are still possible.
