A nice start to the Central Valley Fastpitch Softball League (CVFL) got even better this past week for the Newtown 12-and-under travel softball team.
The Hawks opened the CVFL season by winning three of four games before taking a break for the Babe Ruth State Tournament. After finishing second there, the Hawks went on to win six more CVFL games to run their record to 9-1 (12-3 overall).
The Hawks defeated the Prospect Power (12-3), New Milford Gems (12-3), Cheshire Black Wildcats (8-4), Naugatuck Nightmares (12-3), Watertown Rapids (13-8), and Fairfield Blaze (15-1).
Against Propect, Kelly Tenney, Joanna Barry and Elissa Robertson sparkled on defense. On the mound, Stacy Broughton and Jenna Legros combined on a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts. At the plate, Broughton and Legros both hit doubles, while Tenney had two singles had a pair of singles and Laura Newberry, Katie Kirrane, Robertson and Barry all had with singles.
In the win against the New Milford Gems, both Tenney and Jaclyn Van Waalwijk went 2-for-3 with a double and single. Megan Sajovic hit a long one in right field for a single and Katie Schmidt, Newberry and Broughton had singles. Broughton pitched well with nine strikeouts in five innings while Sajovic added one more strikeout in the last inning for a combined no-hitter. Kirrane, Schmidt and Nora Lynn Shimko played well in the field.
Against Cheshire, Legros fired a complete game four-hitter, striking out eight. Schmidt collected three RBI on two singles while Van Waalwijk had one RBI off a triple, Newberry turned a beautiful bunt into a single and RBI, Melissa Fracker had two singles and an RBI, Shimko had a single and RBI and Legros had two singles.
Against Naugatuck, Newberry went 2-for-3 with a triple and two singles. Schmidt had three singles and two RBI while Barry homered, Shimko tripled, and Alberico singled with a run scored. Schmidt also had a great day behind the plate, throwing two steal attempts out at second and collecting two outs from bunt attempts. Sajovic pitched a solid game, tossing a three-hitter with nine strikeouts.
Against Watertown, Harrington hit a big double that brought in two runs, Schmidt hit two singles and Broughton, Van Waalwijk, Sajovic, Fracker, and Alberico each contributed with singles. Broughton and Legros pitched well, combining for seven strikeouts.
And against Fairfield, LeGros and Sajovic pitched a no-hitter, striking out 11 batters.. Everyone contributed to the offense, scoring five runs in the first inning with singles by Robertson, Tenney, Schmidt, and Broughton. Barry later blasted a homer while singles by Fracker, Harrington, Robertson and Legros plated five runs in the fifth inning.
