The Newtown Soccer Club’s U13 boys’ team sure went out in style recently when it won three games and captured the Newington Tournament championship in its final competition together as the United.

Over the past four years, the United has won several tournaments and division titles and this is all due to the dedication and hard work of the athletes. The Newington Tournament was just another feather in the team’s collective cap.

The United fell, 2-1, to Newington to open the tournament. Russ Cinicola scored the goal while Matt Spinner, Tony Perretta, and Mike Nastri were solid on offense. Ryan Bigham, Kevin Quinn and Scott Shpunt also played well.

The United came back, though, with a 2-0 win over Southington in which Nick Mentessana and Ciao Kowarick scored goals. Brian Miles and Kevin Quinn were excellent on defense while Adam Drummond was superb between the posts. Ryan Davies and Mike Nastri supported the offense.

In a 3-0 win over Simsbury, Brian Miles, Ryan Davies and Nick Mentessana all netted goals and Adam Drummond once again earned a shutout. Ryan Bigham, Tony Perretta and Luke Magill teamed up on offense as Scott Shpunt excelled on defense.

In the finals, Newtown went wild and romped past West Hartford, 5-0. Luke Magill scored a pair of goals as Ryan Davies, Nick Mentessana and Mile Nastri each found the nylon. Adam Drummond recorded his third shutout as Ryan Bigham and Brian Miles supported him on defense. Scott Shpunt, Ciao Kowarick and Kevin Quinn were tough on offense.

The United was without the services of Justin Bass and Billy Mantz, due to injury. Matt Spinner was also hurt during the tournament and missed play.

But it was a solid finish nonetheless for the United.
