Newtown Youth Services would like to thank all those who supported our “Music Under the Stars” program on Friday evening, despite the somewhat inclement weather. In true “the show must go on” spirit, Playback and Sci-fi Lullaby played to an enthusiastic gathering. Thanks, also, to band members and all the volunteers who helped make this event possible.

Positive Parenting

POSITIVE PARENTING workshops are held at NYS and may be hosted in your school, business, or home. We are presently setting up the fall schedule so now is the time to inquire.

There are currently two programs available. “Positive Parenting” is geared for parents of preschool and elementary school children, and “Welcome to the Teen Zone” is for parents of middle and high school students.

New to NYS’ Parenting Program  this fall will be a course for parents of special need children.

To further reach out into the community, NYS staff members are contacting local businesses to set up programs for employees at their place of business. These sessions may be held during lunchtime or other convenient times during the work day.

Our Parenting Programs are a great way to meet people who may be dealing with many of the same issues. If you would like to host a Positive Parenting program in your home, school, or business, please contact Roseanne Loring at 270-4335 for further information.

NYS Summer Programs

“LEARNING TO GROW” — The Youth Garden is a work in progress. We are looking for middle and high school age youths to volunteer several hours a week. A variety of flowers and vegetables are planted and need to be cared for. If you enjoy gardening or being outside please call the office for further information.

MENTORSHIP — Are you interested in becoming a certified mentor? NYS will work around your summer schedule. We welcome all high school students and adults who would like to give some of their time to help someone.  One course has already been held and another is planned for early August.

“THINGS I WISH I HAD KNOWN BEFORE I WENT TO COLLEGE!” — If you are a college-bound senior and have questions on just what college life is really like, join current college students for the remainder of this five-session program. Discussions will explore various aspects of college life and will be held on Wednesday nights beginning at 7 pm. August 2, “Financial Matters,” “Time Management,” “Diversity” and “Transferring.”

College students will answer questions honestly and provide an insight into just what is myth and what is reality on today’s campuses. In order for the students to gather as much information as possible, this workshop is for STUDENTS ONLY. There is no fee.

Youth Group Meetings

The High School Youth Advisory Board (HS YAB) and the Middle School Youth Advisory Board (MS YAB) are on hiatus for the summer.

ATTENTION MS YAB members (present and interested ones): Please watch this column for a possible joint community service project in late August. Details as they become available.

If you are interested in joining one of these groups please call the NYS office. New members are always welcome. NYCAAP meeting times will vary. Please call the office for dates and times.

All programs will take place at Newtown Youth Services, 41-A Main Street (next to Town Hall), unless noted. For further information on any of the above programs, please call Newtown Youth Services at 270-4335.
