Direct Marketing

The Old-Fashioned Way

BETHEL — Area residents gathered last Saturday at the Bethel Farmers Market to buy fresh-picked produce and flowers directly from area farmers and growers.

The farmers market, which is held on a field behind the Fairfield County Agricultural Center on Stony Hill Road, is in its 19th year of operation.

Gary Ober of Burr Farm Garden Center on Obtuse Road South in Brookfield is at the farmers market weekly, selling a variety of flowers to the public. The farmers market offers the public better quality items, such as fresh basil, than is likely to be found at a grocery store or supermarket, Mr Ober said.

At the several stands set up at the market last Saturday, farmers and growers displayed copious amounts of appealing produce which prompted buyers to form lines to make their purchases.

The farmers market offers produce grown by farmers who lease land from the state at Fairfield Hills. Items include garlic, shallots, onions, hot peppers, sweet peppers, eggplant, pumpkins, gourds, beans, sweet corn, and berries.

The farmers market will be held at the agricultural center on Saturdays from 9 am to 1 pm until the growing season ends this fall.
