Wrestling Their Way To The Top … Newtown Grapplers Stand Out In Camp

Newtown was strongly represented at the recent Danbury-based Mustang Wrestling Camp with participation from 14 boys from the Over The Top Wrestling Club.

Now in its seventh year, the camp — known formally as Mad Hatter Camp — was held at Danbury’s Immaculate High School and run by Immaculate Head Coach Brian Hayes for both boys and girls ages 6-18.

The camp averaged 71 campers a session and had wrestlers come from towns as far away as Fairfield to participate in the day-long sessions which stressed technique and conditioning.

The camp is staffed by paid counselors, all of whom were state champions, as well as several volunteer counselors who are college wrestlers.

The Newtown OTT club, now entering its fifth season, will begin instruction again in the fall. Under the guidance of coaches Steve Ford and Chris Bray, the OTT teams grew to 45 wrestlers this past season. Bray attended two of the Mustang Camp sessions to volunteer and assist with the wrestlers. The last day of camp featured an all-day tournament followed by an awards ceremony recognizing the wrestler’s achievements.
