Van Down Bank

Motorist Valdomiro Sobrinho, 58, of Brookfield was driving a 2001 Ford Econoline van northward on Currituck Road, and approaching its intersection with Brennan Road, at about 1:30 am July 11, when while in an area where Currituck Road curves to the left, the van continued traveling straight and went off the road’s northwest shoulder, police said.

The van struck two guy wires for a utility pole, pulling those wires out of the ground. The vehicle also went down an embankment.

Sobrinho was not injured. Police issued Sobrinho an infraction for a turning violation.

Station Wagon Mishap

Motorist Chandler Moss, 21, of Southbury was driving a 1998 Subaru Legacy station wagon northward on Toddy Hill Road, near its intersection with Meadow Woods Lane, about 5:40 pm July 13, when a vehicle which was three vehicles ahead of him on the road, stopped while preparing to make a left turn, police said.

The Subaru then attempted to stop but then swerved to the right and veered off the road, coming to rest atop a rock, police report. Moss was not injured. Police issued him a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Vandalism

Police are investigating an incident that occurred sometime between 8 am on July 15 and 3:15 pm on July 16 in which someone vandalized a stop sign posted on Mt Nebo Road at its intersection with Boggs Hill Road. Police ask people with information on the incident to contact Officer Steven Borges at the police station at 426-5841.

Drug Charges

Police report they charged two people with drug offenses following an incident that occurred about 9 pm July 17 near 120 South Main Street.

Police said they stopped a vehicle driven by Emily Newton-Tanzer, 18, of 85 Forest Drive for some driving violations, after which they had their German shepherd check the vehicle for the presence of drugs.

Police said they charged Newton-Tanzer with possession of less than four ounces of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, failure to drive to the right, and making a restricted turn.

Also, police arrested a female “youthful offender” passenger in the vehicle on charges of possession of less than four ounces of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of tobacco by a person under age 18. Youthful offenders are either age 16 or 17. State law conceals the identities of people under age 18 who are charged with crimes.

Police released both defendants on written promises to appear in court. Newton-Tanzer is scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court on August 4. The youthful offender is slated for Danbury Youthful Offender Court on July 31.

Theft From Vehicle

Police went to the Hot Shots Grille, Restaurant, and Tap Room at 130 Mt Pleasant Road (Route 6) on July 16 to investigate a theft of items from a vehicle there.

 At about 2:30 pm, someone illegally entered and stole items from a van which was parked in the bar’s parking lot, police said. Police did not specify what was taken but said that the crime amounted to third-degree larceny, which is a felony involving the theft of items worth between $1,000 and $5,000. Police ask anyone with information on the crime to contact investigating Officer Todd Dingee at 426-5841.

Truck Hits Pillar

About 9:36 am on July 13, driver Kantcho Kantchev, 53, of Danbury, who was driving a commercial 2005 Chevrolet box truck, was parked in a parking lot at Sugar Hill Service Center at 153 Sugar Street (Route 302), according to police.

Kantcho then backed up the truck, inadvertently backing into and damaging a pillar of an overhang that is attached to the building, police report.

Kantchev was not injured. Police took no enforcement.

Lexus Crash

About 2:45 am July 18, motorist Christopher Longo, 32, of Bethel was driving a 2006 Lexus IS-250 sedan northward on South Main Street, when he drove off the right road shoulder, struck a utility pole, and then went through the parking lot of Ben’s Mason Supply & Hardware at 91 South Main Street, police report.

The Lexus came to rest in a wooded area north of the parking lot, police said.

Longo reported pain due to the restraining action of the auto’s seatbelt, according to police. Ambulance volunteers transported him to Danbury Hospital, police said. Police gave him an infraction for making a restricted turn. Utility crews went to the accident scene to make repairs.

Taunton Hill Road

Motorist Emily Blewitt, 22, of 136 Taunton Hill Road was driving a 1991 Toyota Celica coupe southward near 101 Taunton Hill Road, just north of its intersection with Wedgewood Court, about 12:53 am July 17, when she rounded a curve to the right on the road, but lost control of the auto, drove in a straight line and then crossed over into the northbound lane, police said.

The auto went off the road and struck a stone wall, after which it reentered the road, police said.

Blewitt was not injured. Police verbally warned her for making a travel lane violation.

Car Hits Wall

Motorist Meghann Freeman, 26, of 4 Farm Field Ridge Road was driving a 1999 Chevrolet Malibu sedan northward near 42 Walnut Tree Hill Road, west of that street’s intersection with Patriot Ridge Road, at about 9:53 pm July 14, when while entering a curve in the road, she failed to turn the vehicle sufficiently and drove onto some turf, after which she struck a stone wall, police report.

Freeman was not injured. Police issued her a written warning for making a restricted turn.

Sandy Hook Center

Motorist Kathryn Shaw, 68, of Southbury, who was driving a 2001 Subaru eastward near 98 Church Hill Road about 12:12 pm July 16, slowed for traffic conditions and was then hit from behind by eastbound motorist Jeanne Pasacreta, 52, of 23 Ridge Road, who was driving a 1998 Nissan, police report.

There were no injuries. Pasacreta received a written warning for following too closely, police said.

Three Vehicles

Police report a three-vehicle accident on South Main Street, near its intersection with Guneva Drive, about 10:36 am July 18.

The incident involved motorist Gregory Smith, 40, of 63 Parmalee Hill Road, who was driving a 2006 Porsche Cayenne SUV; motorist Timothy Young, 50, of Lewiston, N.Y., who was driving a 2007 Ford F-150 pickup truck which was hauling a cargo trailer; and motorist Daniel Maki, 42, of 17 Shut Road, who was driving a 2009 Toyota Camry sedan, police said.

There were no injuries. Police said that both Smith and Young received written warnings for following too closely.

Highway Crash

State police report that during a period of heavy traffic, motorist Michael Macomber, 48, of Beverly, Mass., who was driving a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu sedan eastward on Interstate 84, near Exit 9, about 5:26 pm July 15, struck a 2001 Volvo S-80 T-6 driven by Michelle Williams, 45, of Waterbury.

There were no injuries. Macomber received an infraction for following too closely, state police said.

 

I-84 Collision

At about 4:53 pm July 15, on eastbound Interstate 84, east of Exit 9, motorist Joseph Tanzi, 60, of Carmel, N.Y., who was driving a 2000 Mercury, struck the rear end of a 2008 Chevrolet Suburban SUV driven by John Whittaker, 45, of Bradford, Mass., state police said.

There were no injuries. Tanzi received a written warning for following too closely.

Hawleyville Accident

About 8:30 am July 14, trucker Marco Gucowski, 46, of New Milford, who was driving a 2005 Freightliner truck on eastbound Interstate 84’s Exit 9 off-ramp, was entering Hawleyville Road, when the truck was hit on that ramp by motorist Jennifer Tyrell, 26, of Danbury, who was driving a 2003 Jeep Liberty SUV, state police said.

There were no injuries. State police said they warned Tyrell for improper passing.

 

Alcohol Charges

Police report they observed some suspicious activity in Sandy Hook Center about 7 pm July 17, after which they stopped motorist David Lewis, 19, of 34 Saw Mill Road for a motor vehicle violation on nearby Riverside Road.

Police said that after investigating, they issued Lewis an infraction ticket on a charge of possession of alcohol by a minor, and also made a police referral to the state Department of Motor Vehicles concerning Lewis’s possessing alcohol in a motor vehicle.

Warrant

After learning that police held a warrant for his arrest, Jared Bradley, 36, of 84-A Huntingtown Road turned himself in at the police station on the morning of July 21 and was charged with failure to appear in court, police said.

That charge stems from an earlier charge of failure to respond to an infraction, which originated in a January 14 incident in which Bradley received an infraction ticket on a littering violation, police said.

After posting $500 bail, Bradley was released for an August 4 appearance in Danbury Superior Court, according to police.
