Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multipurpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of the Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Walmart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

*Make your appointment for HAIRCUTS on Monday, July 27, with Patty.

*The BOSTON POPS with JAMES TAYLOR at Tanglewood in Lee, Mass., on Sunday, August 30.

*A NEW CRAFT CLASS of making cards with a unique Iris Folding will be taught every Thursday at 2 pm. All supplies will be provided.

*TAI CHI will be offered every Tuesday at 2 pm. It offers a unique way to experience fitness and serenity.

*YOGA classes have been cancelled for July 27 and 30.

 

Upcoming Programs

*BINGO will be on Wednesdays, August 5, 12, 19, and 26 at 1 pm.

*Wear your favorite Hawaiian shirt and grass skirt to the HAWAIIAN LUAU on Friday, August 7, at 1 pm.

*Listen to NANCY THE NUTRITIONIST on August 11 at noon.

*BOB MELL RETURNS with his karaoke machine on Thursday, August 13, at 1:30 pm. Each person chooses first, second, and third place finishers who will go on to compete with other area senior centers.

*EDUCATING RITA will be performed by Richard Clark on Thursday, August 27, at 1 pm. This is the classic tale of a Cockney girl who looks for culture and finds herself along the way.

*A CRIME PREVENTION PRESENTATION, sponsored by Triad, will be on Friday, August 28, at 1 pm.

 

Day Trips

*MOHEGAN SUN CASINO bus trip on Thursday, August 6, includes $15 food coupon or free buffet and three $5 bets. Cost is $30.

*Depart for Chicopee, Mass., and the HU KE LAU RESTAURANT and Dinner Theater and enjoy an all-you-can eat seafood buffet and a show featuring the Polynesian dancers on Tuesday, August 18. The first stop will be the Christmas Tree Shop. Cost is $93.

*HOLIDAY HILL PICNIC in Cheshire will be Monday, August 24, 9 am to 4 pm. Food galore, bocce, horseshoes, shuffleboard, bingo, mini golf, and heated pools. Free transportation from the center; bus leaves at 8:30 am. The cost is $27. Payment is due August 10 for prepaid tickets.

*Discover FALL RIVER, Mass., on Wednesday, September 9, with lunch at The Abbey Grill, which is part of the International Institute of Culinary Arts. After lunch enjoy a “unique tour” of the Lizzie Borden Bed & Breakfast Museum, and then on to the Portuguese Bakery, known for their breads. Depart at 7 am; cost is $98.

Overnight Trips

*UPCOMING TRIPS: Las Vegas on October 26–30 at Flamingo Hilton or Harrah’s, cost is $729, $100 deposit due upon signup and an Atlantic Canada Cruise, September 7–12, Nova Scotia Cruise on The Carnival Triumph. More information can be obtained at the center.

*YOGA classes are Monday and Thursday at 10:30 am.

*Billiards room; poker/card room; ping pong; and Wii bowling, golf, tennis, and baseball.

*Wii BOWLING, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons.

*SCRAPBOOKING every Tuesday at 10 am.

*MAKE CARDS FOR OUR TROOPS every Tuesday from 10 am to noon and 1 to 3 pm.

*BEGINNERS BRIDGE LESSONS on Wednesday, 9:30 am, with Mary Matern.

*BOARD GAME DAY is every Thursday at 1 pm. Coffee or tea and snack will be supplied.

*MOVIE DAY on Tuesdays and Fridays at 2 pm. Enjoy a good “favorite” movie with a friend.

Monday: AM cards, hatha yoga, exercise, PM chorus group, weaving, exercise.

Tuesday: AM cards for troops, line dancing; PM Tai Chi, movie.

Wednesday: AM bridge, exercise; PM exercise.

Thursday: AM hatha yoga, cards; PM craft class, mah jongg, Scrabble, Wii bowling.

Friday: AM mah jongg, Quilts of Valor, PM Exercise class, Bible study group, knitting, movie.

 

Menu For Week Of July 27-31

Monday: Barilla plus spaghetti and meatballs in marinara sauce, parmesan cheese, chopped spinach, garlic toast, seasonal fresh fruit.

Tuesday: Baked potato stuffed with broccoli, chicken and cheese, diced carrots, wheat roll, mandarin oranges.

Wednesday: Chicken noodle soup with crackers, seafood salad plate served on a bed of lettuce, with tomato, beet salad and French dressing, sandwich roll, iced chocolate cake.

Thursday: Beef and bean chili served over rice, fiesta blend vegetables, cornbread, ice cream cup.

And for planning ahead—

Monday: August 3: Stuffed salmon with rosemary cream sauce, roasted potato, peas and mushrooms, soft breadstick, fruit cocktail.

Tuesday: August 4: Salisbury steak with mushroom gravy, mashed potato, Roman blend vegetables, whole wheat bread, seasonal fresh fruit.
