NHS Grad Presents Senior Project To School Board
NHS Grad Presents
Senior Project To School Board
By Eliza Hallabeck
Now, as a Newtown High School graduate, Allyson Makuch stood before school board members during the boardsâ last meeting on July 14, and explained a project she created in the Senior Project class at NHS during her last semester at the school.
âI had the opportunity to take a class called the Senior Project class,â said Allyson to the school board. âAnd that is a semester long class in which you choose a project, and then you see it come to fruition, or partially to fruition, or it just keeps going, like my project.â
The plan she chose for her project centered around creating a sustainable garden at the Taunton Press, on South Main Street.
In a collaboration between Newtown High School greenery students and the Taunton Press, Allyson saw her project transform into a reality on April 28, when the groundbreaking for the garden took place.
The idea came together for Allyson when Chuck Miller, special issues editor of Fine Homebuilding Magazine from The Taunton Press and his wife, Jeanette, head of the English department at Newtown High School and one of Allysonâs now former teachers, joined Allyson, who was still looking for a space for her project, in the effort.
On Tuesday, July 14, Allyson proudly held up âone victorious beetâ for the school board to see as the first harvest from the project.
