WATERBURY – Infrared thermography – a tool in veterinary diagnostics – was presented to the public last month as part of a seminar sponsored by Teikyo Post University in Waterbury. The seminar was conducted by Donna Harper, DVM, of Vet-Therm in Roswell, New Mexico.

It was an introduction to the use of infrared thermography in veterinary diagnostics for the public, prospective students, and veterinarians alike. Attendees from several states and Canada studied an overview of the use of veterinary infrared thermography, and were invited to participate in a more advanced two-week course that will be held at the university in the fall.

In the fall advanced instructional course, the first week will provide instruction in-depth on the basic fundamentals of veterinary thermography, while the second week will be geared toward the application of those fundamentals in the field on both small animals and horses. More details will be announced in the near future.

For more information, contact Carole Baker at 1-203-596-4631 at the Equine Management Department at Teikyo Post University, or e-mail CBaker@teikyopost.edu or Dr. Harper at info@vet-therm.com.

Now, all horse lovers and owners who wish to learn more about correct horse care and handling will be interested in the courses in Equine Husbandry that began Sunday, July 18, with Stable Management I. This course will run for four consecutive Sundays and can earn CEU credits. It is also possible to attend all or individual days as needed, with or without the credits.

Stable Management I will address this need, progressing from evolution and how it affects today’s horse, through aspects of the horse industry to safe handling, correct grooming procedures, tack fitting and appropriate types of equipment including bits, blankets, boots and bandages. Practical ‘hands-on’ time in the barn allows coverage of both theory and its application.

Stable Management I will be offered on four Sundays – July 18 and 25 and August 1 and 8 – from 9 am to 4 pm at the Teikyo Post University Barn at River’s Edge Farm in Bethany.

This course will be complimented by other Continuing Education Units in Equine Husbandry-Stable Management II, Basic Horse Care, Equine Anatomy, Equine Health, and Horse Ownership. They can be taken individually or as part of the series and are open to anyone interested – no pre-requisites are required. They will normally run for eight weeks, three hours per week in the evening or at the weekend and can earn CEU credits or be for personal enrichment.

For CEU credits to be earned the cost is $600 or a daily fee of $170. For anyone who would like to audit, the cost is $475 or a daily fee of $120. To apply or for more information, call the Equine Management Department at (203) 596-4631 or e-mail CBaker@teikyopost.edu.
