Patricia E. Hayes

Patricia E. Hayes, 86, formerly of Birch Rise Drive, Newtown, died July 19 in River Glen Health Care Center, Southbury. Mrs Hayes was the wife of the late Nicholas G. Hayes.

She was born in Rome, N.Y. on March 17, 1918, a daughter of the late George F. and Anna (Herpst) Golnitch.

A resident of Newtown since 1956, Mrs Hayes worked for 13 years as a telemarketer for Grolier, Inc in Danbury. She also assisted her late husband in the operation of the former Essex House Catering Hall.

Mrs Hayes was an active member of St Rose of Lima Parish, serving in many church organizations, and was a member of the Columbiettes. She had been an officer of the St Rose School Home & School Association when her children were enrolled there.

She was founding member and former president of the Newtown Association for Retarded Children. Pat was the former tax collector for the Borough of Newtown, a volunteer for the Newtown Chapter of Regional Hospice, and a driver for Meals on Wheels. An avid golfer, Pat was a member of the Newtown Country Club.

Mrs Hayes is survived by two sons, Dennis Hayes of Newtown and Thomas Hayes of Oakland, Maine; one daughter, Barbara Hayes of Modesto, Calif., a brother, Harold T. Golnitch of Dayton, Ohio; two sisters, Geraldine Church of Rome, N.Y., and Marian Lewis of Florida; and two grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Bruce Hayes.

Funeral services will be held Friday, July 23, at 9 am, from the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown, and at 9:30 am in St Rose of Lima Church for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in Newtown Village Cemetery. Calling hours were scheduled at the Honan Funeral Home on Thursday, July 22, from 7 to 9 pm.
