Rock Climbing Challenging And Adventurous For Middle School Campers

The Newtown Parks & Recreation Middle School Camp has been more than arts and crafts or playing sports. The group of about 35 students has been experiencing challenging and adventurous activities that involve support and teamwork.
The group encountered a rock climbing wall. Some found it easy to conquer. For others it was a challenge and a chance to overcome their fear.
âItâs fun and a challenge,â Greg Gruce said. âI think whatâs most challenging is when you first start and your hands start slipping, but youâre really not.â
Small World Adventures in Bridgewater made the climbing experience possible. The students learned about safety first and foremost and then what mindset they need to overcome what is preventing them from making it to the top of the wall.
âI think itâs important because it stimulates growth by giving kids an opportunity to push themselves in a supportive and enjoyable atmosphere,â Gary Markowski of Small World Adventures said.
With rock climbing, the students not only learn about individual success, but they also learn the importance of support and building trust.
âYou work with a collective and individual relationships that get strengthened because of that support,â Mr Markowski said. âSo the feelings of accomplishing something as an individual or watching someone else accomplish something with your support and encouragement goes along way. Possibly beyond this one day of climbing.â
Three students could be climbing at a time on various difficulty levels. Supportive comments could be heard from students on the ground like âYou can do it,â â Good job,â or âYouâre almost there.â Watching the student make it to the top or knowing that the student gave it all they could was all that mattered to the middle school group.
âIt was fun. It was very thrilling on the most difficult climb,â Christie Porcelli said. âI liked it. [Itâs challenging] to figure out where I should pull myself up and where I should put my foot next.â
Komal Sandhu was quite challenged by the hardest rock climb. Her first try did not lead to the success of making it to the top, but showed her that a positive attitude and her effort brought success in a different way.
âIt was hard the first time,â she said. âItâs an experience. Itâs lots of fun.â
By watching others and trying again, Komal over came the challenge and made it to the top.
