KidsFit 'Hits On Broadway' Camp
KidsFit âHits On Broadwayâ Camp
By Tanjua Damon
It was a week on Broadway for children aged four to eight at the KidsFit program entitled Hits on Broadway, where students were able to participant in various movement activities.
The program, facilitated by Heather Law, featured aerobic conditioning, gymnastics, tumbling, ballet, yoga, coordination and strength building skills, as well as singing and dancing. Heather Morgan, Erica Vacaro, and Kristene Salbu also helped with the week-long program that ran July 16 through July 20.
The theme for the week was âI Am a Star â I can move in many ways!â Throughout the week, the students worked with various forms of movement, like running, hopping, jumping, skipping, catching, leaping, and dancing. All the movement concepts were flavored with music from various Broadway shows including Annie, The Sound of Music, Music Man, Peter Pan, and Oklahoma.
âI try to teach the children they each have gifts and talents,â Mrs Law said.
The program is a way for children to find their talent and do their best so they can improve their individual performance levels.
âIt builds self confidence. Itâs non-competitive,â Mrs Law said. âI thoroughly believe in not putting children into specific things too early.â
KidsFit programs provide children an opportunity to learn about how their bodies relate to different movement as well as gaining some social skills with other children. The students also learn about healthy living.
âThey learn to feel good about the way their body moves,â Mrs Law said. âThen they become skilled movers.â
