First SMART Camp Session Ends

Campers and parents alike celebrated SMART (Summer Music and Art) Camp's 25th anniversary with a showcase of the children's work on July 15, the last day of the camp's first session.The Lonely Shark was created through the ideas of both the instructors and the campers.The Little Mermaid.Further information about Newtown Continuing Education programs is available by calling 203-426-1787 or on its website, newtowncontinuinged.org.

The nine-day camp housed at Head O'Meadow Elementary School began July 5, and from the start children sculpted pottery, created puppets, learned about rockets, and much more in the multiple classes offered through the camp.

SMART Camp, overseen by Newtown Continuing Education, offers programs centered around music, art, and science for more than 80 children exiting kindergarten through sixth grade.

The last day of the camp's first of two sessions ended with parents welcomed to view and collect their children's artwork. The parents and campers then watched a fashion show produced by the camp's fashion design program students, and a musical created by the theater program.

The fashion design instructor Hannah Eckhardt said she thought the fashion show went well, even with the challenge of constructing clothing from paper and tape.

"I'm pretty sure [the campers were] happy with what they made," Ms Eckhardt said.
