Children’s Programs

The following programs are all being offered during the week of July 25-29 at the library: 

*Crafts Around the World: Mondays, drop in between 1 and 3, until August 8, for ages 4-9 (and their parents), on July 25 we will be making Chinese dragons;

*PJ Story Time: Tuesdays at 6:30 pm, popular family program features stories, silly songs and a puppet show for ages 3-7, pajamas encouraged, July 26 will be The Lion and The Mouse;

*Cooking Around the World, Wednesdays at noon, ages 8-10 invited to explore the cuisines of Syria, Vietnam, India, Peru and Morocco, online registration requested, $5 material fee due day of the program, and on July 27 Shahnaz Sayed will demonstrate how to make vegetable and beef samosas;

*Creating from Clay with Randi Rote on Thursday, July 28, at 3 pm: Ages 5-8 will hear the true story of  “Dave the Potter,” a slave who created pottery and inscribed it with original poetry, and then create their own pot from clay (register online, and $5 material fee due the day of the program); and

*“Les Julian: We All Laugh in the Same Language,” on Friday, July 29, at 4: Ages 5 and up invited to listen as the award-winning entertainer performs songs that will make them laugh and think (online registration requested).

Future events include Papillion: Le Raconteur Acadien on Tuesday, August 2, with a gumbo of Cajun, Zydeco and New Orleans songs and stories by the southern entertainer, for ages 5 and up.

For Young Adults

*The Teen Summer Reading Challenge for students entering grades 6-12 is in full swing. Every time you finish a book, fill out a summary at the YA display, take it to the desk and receive one ticket for every 50 pages.  Then come back and deposit your tickets in the raffle boxes of your choice.

There will be one more drawing, on Monday, August 8. All participants will be entered into the Grand Prize Drawing for a Kindle Wi-Fi, which will also be done August 8.

*Bone Jewelry Craft: On Thursday, July 28, at 1 pm, Katie Stevenson will lead a 90-minute program to create distinctive jewelry from beads and small bone pieces. Limited to 15 young people entering grades 6-12, $6 will be payable at program and online registration is requested.

*Mehndi Henna Body Art: On Wednesday, August 3, from 1:30-3:30, henna artist Nev Levin will apply henna tattoos for ages 10-18. Parental permission slips will be required at drop-off.  Sign up online.

*Duct Tape Crafts, Thursday, August 4, 1 pm: Katie Stevenson returns for a 90-minute program, limited to 15 students entering grades 5-12, who want to learn how to make a tote bag from an empty pet food, birdseed or other colorful bag (bring an empty bag if you have one) or a spare pair of flip-flops, a belt, or even a wallet. Sign up online, and a $6 fee is due at the program.

Adult Programs

*Needle Felting with Katie Stevenson: A class for anyone who loves fiber art, Katie Stevenson will teach this fun and creative craft on Monday, July 25, at 1:30 pm. There is a $6 supply fee due at the start of class. Optional kits will available for purchase. Space is limited so registration is required.

*Escapes and Intrigues — Classic Thrillers for Summer Reading: Julie Stern, a retired teacher of English and philosophy will be back at the library this summer to lead a discussion on classic mysteries. The next program will be Tuesday, July 26, at 7:30 pm, concerning Rogue Male by Geoffrey Household.

*Purchasing a Laptop: Mike Ingber will cover everything you need to know before you purchase a laptop on Tuesday, August 2, at 10 am.

*Summer Bracelet, Wednesday, August 10, at 2 or 7 pm: Join artist Pat Martin to learn how to make a braided bracelet with seed beads and crystals, $9 supply fee due at start of class, online registration due before then.

*Nonfiction DVDs: Check out our nonfiction DVD collection, including new titles on travel, fitness, Ken Burns series, dancing, sign language, coaching youth sports, and even “Dr V on Call” health topic DVDs featuring local physicians discussing the latest medical information.
