Youth Symphony Announces Auditions For Season

NORWALK — Norwalk Youth Symphony will be holding auditions for the 2006-07 season between August 26 and September 6. All musicians from fifth through twelfth grades are invited to apply. Auditions are by appointment only.

Having recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, Norwalk Youth Symphony is considered one of the longest-running and finest youth orchestras in the country. NYS is comprised of approximately 250 students from 21 towns throughout Fairfield, New Haven, Litchfield and Westchester counties, including a few from Newtown every year.

NYS regularly rehearses at Norwalk City Hall, 125 East Avenue.

The organization sponsors four orchestras: Prelude, a string orchestra for those who are often getting their first orchestral experience; Interlude, a more advanced string orchestra that serves as preparation for entry into our full symphony orchestras; Concert Orchestra, a full orchestra playing on an intermediate level; and Principal Orchestra, the most advanced orchestra, playing demanding repertoire.

The application deadline is August 15. Woodwind and brass players are especially encouraged to apply.

Audition fee is $20. Scholarship assistance is available.

The audition schedule is as follows: Saturday, August 26, cellos; Monday, August 28, brass; Tuesday, August 29, violas; Wednesday and Thursday, August 30-31, violins; Friday, September 1, percussions and violins; Tuesday, September 5, brass and flutes; and Wednesday, September 6, all other woodwinds.

First rehearsal for all groups will be Saturday, September 16.
