Sandy Hook School Abuzz With Activity In Summer
Sandy Hook School Abuzz With Activity In Summer
By Laurie Borst
While students and teachers enjoy the summer sun, Sandy Hook School is a beehive of activity. Head Custodian Dennis Best and his crew, Andy Spencer, Rick Thorn, and Gene Schaniel, are putting in 40-hour weeks.
âOur business is to get rolling to open for next year,â said Mr Best. âThis year we have two teens working with us, Jarred Yllanes and Steven Sapienza.â Steven is an alumnus of Sandy Hook School.
The custodial team stays very busy. They have to break down each room, which entails emptying it as much as possible. Next, everything is cleaned and sanitized. Floors are refinished and carpets extracted (deep cleaned), yhen everything gets put back in as the teacher requests.
And it is not just the classrooms. The lavatories, gymnasium, cafeteria, library, lobby, and hallways all need to be cleaned as well.
Besides getting the building ready for the new school year, the custodians also do daily duty cleaning up after the Summer School and the Education Connection programs, both of which use the building.
