Amadeus by Peter Shaffer, directed by Robin Frome, will open tonight at The Little Theatre.

Town Players of Newtown will offer its production weekends to August 3, with performances Friday and Saturday nights at 8 pm and Sunday afternoons at 2 pm. Tickets are $30 and available at newtownplayers.org.

Amadeus is arguably one of the most successful serious plays of the last half century. It celebrates Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (being played for Town Players by Tyler Holm) and his music but also analyzes, with compassion and wit, how ordinary most people are. It is a drama with nuggets of historical truths. It’s a tragedy. A contest between Antonio Salieri (John Bergdahl) and God vs the inexplicable talents and gifts of Mozart and his “ordinariness.”

The Town Players cast additionally includes Isabelle Bergman as Constanze (Stanzi) Weber, Gus Botazzi as Joseph II, Dan Pullen as Count Johann Kilian von Strack, Dean Alexander as Count Franz Orsini-Rosenberg, Michelle Rosa as Baroness Gottfried van Swieten, and Lindsay Clouse and Amy Strachan as two “Venticelli.”

In the upcoming production, Frome brings an insight and a unique ear to a story most people think they know. Town Players will offer a modern staging with an emphasis on humanity and relationships.

Kimberly Marcus and Gene Golaszewski are serving as producers, with Stage Manager Patricia Berg and Light/Sound Operator Cecil Kneen.

The theater is at 19 Orchard Hill Road.

‘Never Sang’ Auditions

Town Players will conclude its 2024 season with a production of Robert Anderson’s 1968 drama I Never Sang For My Father.

Auditions for that show, to be presented September 20-October 5, have been planned for Sunday and Monday evenings, July 28-29.

Director Gus Bottazzi has openings for all roles. Character breakdowns and sides are available at newtownplayers.org.
