Students stood in a circle during the Theater and Performance Workshop class held at the SMART (Summer Music And Arts) Camp on Wednesday, July 9.

The students listened as Jane Ellen Anderson and Emily Anderson led them through a number of exercises.

“It’s going really well,” said SMART head intern Ashley Maturo as the students in the Theater and Performance Workshop sang. “The kids are so engaged.”

This year is the 23rd summer Newtown Continuing Education’s SMART Camp has offered programs for kindergarten through sixth grade students. SMART offers two sessions each summer. The first session began on Monday, July 7, and runs through July 18. The second sessions is set to start on Monday, July 21, and run through August 1. Each session costs $319 per child and offers a range of class options.

Site Supervisor Stephanie Schwartz said SMART had the most enrolled in the first session “ever.”

“It just keeps growing,” Ms Schwartz said.

The second session of SMART will continue enrolling students until the sessions begins, according to Ms Schwartz.

Down the hallway from the Theater and Performance Workshop, Don Kopyscinski oversaw the “Great Clay Adventure” course on Wednesday. So far the students had worked on pinch pots, making slab boxes, and adding decorative touches to their creations.

“It’s awesome. This is my second year doing this,” said Juliana Miraldi, who was working on her own clay creation. “It’s one of my favorites.”

In the “Getting Art-Sea” class students had already created a range of artwork inspired by the ocean, according to instructor Megan Cardillo.

Campgoers Dallas Alexander and Morgan Beaty were quick to share some of their recent creations in “The Science of Nature Through Art” class. They proudly held up dream catchers they made. Class instructor Katherine Scott said the class focused on creating items from natural material.

Instructor Lisa Dawson had a range of objects already created by her students by Wednesday. She oversaw three class, “Paper Mache,” “Mosaics,” and “Puppet Making” during the first session of SMART.

“Everything has been going really well,” Ms Dawson said.

Other classes offered during the first session of SMART included “Jewelry Design,” “Character Fashion,” “Where in the World,” “Discovering Great Artists,” “Itty Bitty Interiors,” “STEM Explorers,” “Collage and 3-D Art,” and “Poetry and Illustration.”
