Sand Hill Plaza DUI

On learning of a motor vehicle accident at Sand Hill Plaza at 228 South Main Street at about 12:30 pm July 10, police went to the shopping center to investigate.

Police said that motorist John W. Bogas, 46, of Trumbull, who was driving a 2001 GMC Sierra pickup truck, had backed up into a parked, unoccupied 1994 Ford Taurus sedan, near Olympia Sports Center, damaging the Ford. There were no injuries.

Following an investigation, police charged Bogas with driving under the influence. Police released him on a $100 bond for a July 24 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Sexual Assault

Police report that at 11:47 pm July 10 they learned that a girl under age 16 was reported missing, after not having returned home that night. Police said they then learned that the girl was at 43-A Botsford Hill Road, where they went to investigate.

Police said they learned that the girl allegedly had sexual intercourse with Robert E. Coffey, 19, of that address.

Police said they charged Coffey with second degree sexual assault and held him on a $5,000 bond overnight in the police lockup for a July 11 arraignment on the charge in Danbury Superior Court.

Juvenile Incident

Police said they arrested a youth under age 16 on a warrant on July 10, lodging four charges in connection with a June 23 incident at Chipmunk Trail in Pootatuck Park.

Police charged the youth with breach of peace, threatening, criminal trespassing, and with an all-terrain vehicle violation. The victim in the incident was another youth under 16, police said.

Because the youth charged is under 16, his or her identity is shielded by state law. The arrested youth is scheduled to appear in Danbury Juvenile Court July 28.

Route 302 DUI

Police report that a motorist informed them that there was an erratic driver traveling eastward on Route 302 early on the morning on July 12, so they investigated.

Police said they pulled over motorist Mark R. Joseph, 19, of Danbury and gave him field sobriety tests, which he failed. Police charged Joseph with driving under the influence. After processing his arrest, police released Joseph on a $60 bond for a July 24 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Warrant

On July 11, police served an arrest warrant against Joshua Cable, 18, of Naugatuck, charging him with second degree failure to appear in court and with fourth degree larceny. The larceny charge stems from a 2002 bicycle theft, according to police.

Police released Cable on a $5,000 bond for a July 22 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

South Main Rear-Ender

About 8 am July 9, motorist Kiran Sandhu, 47, of 9 Kent Road, who was driving a 1999 Chrysler Sebring, was stopped on southbound South Main Street, waiting to make a left turn into The Fraser-Woods School at 173 South Main Street, when the Chrysler was struck from behind by motorist John F. Anderson, 57, of Bethel, who was driving a 1998 Honda Civic coupe, police said.

There were no injuries in the crash, police said. Police issued Anderson a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Church Hill Crash

About 3:15 pm July 3, motorist Carole Blore, 64, of 38 Underhill Road, who was driving a 1991 Buick Regal, was attempting to turn left from Walnut Tree Hill Road onto eastbound Church Hill Road, police said.

At that time, motorist Cenek Lucky, 29, of Carmel, N.Y., was driving a 1994 Dodge Ram van westward on Church Hill Road, police said. The two vehicles collided.

There were no injuries. Police issued Blore an infraction ticket for failure to grant the right of way.

Intersection Accident

Police report a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Sugar Street, South Main Street, Glover Avenue, and Main Street about 3:40 pm July 8.

Motorist Melanie Troll, 18, of 33 Far View Drive, who was driving a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee sport-utility vehicle with four passengers, was turning left from Sugar Street onto northbound Main Street, when the Jeep collided with motorist Maura Riley, 16, of Bethel, who was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier, which had entered the intersection from westbound Glover Avenue, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Troll an infraction ticket for making a restricted turn.

Garner Assault

State police said that Garner Correctional Institution inmate David Stagnetta, 36, assaulted a correction officer at the high security prison on the afternoon of July 10, injuring the officer.

State police charged Stagnetta with assault on a correction officer. Stagnetta was scheduled for arraignment on the charge July 14 in Danbury Superior Court.

Dual Prison Assault

 State police report that Garner Correctional Institution inmate Francisco Presti, 35, allegedly threw a container of urine on a correction nurse and on a correction officer on July 9 at the high security prison.

State police charged Presti with two counts of assault on a correction officer in connection the incident. Presti was scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court on July 10 to answer the charges.

On July 4, state police had charged prisoner Presti with assault after Presti had thrown a cup of liquid, suspected of being urine, at a correction officer.

I-84 Crash

Motorist Magne Oian, 49, of Rye, N.H., who was driving a 1997 Mercury sedan eastward on Interstate 84 about one mile west of Exit 10 about 7:15 pm July 13, slowed for heavy traffic, and was struck from behind by eastbound motorist Timothy Gilbert, 46, of 41 Horseshoe Ridge Road, who was driving a 2003 Ford sedan, state police said.

There were no injuries. State police said Gilbert failed to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Huntingtown Road

Police report they charged Peter Engel, 19, of 179 Walnut Tree Hill Road with possession of less than four ounces of marijuana and with possession of drug paraphernalia early on the morning of July 14 on Huntingtown Road, after they found some marijuana and a smoking pipe in the back seat of a vehicle occupied by Engel.

Police said the incident stemmed from the presence of several youths loitering on private property on Huntingtown Road.

After processing the case, police released Engel on a promise to appear July 29 in Danbury Superior Court to answer the charges.

Tilson Woods

Police said they learned on July 11 that someone had spray-painted graffiti on stone pillars at an entrance to the Tilson Woods residential subdivision on Pearl Street in Sandy Hook. The vandalism is a case of third degree criminal mischief. Police ask anyone with information on who damaged the property to contact them at 426-5841.

Computer Theft

Police learned on the afternoon of July 11 that someone had stolen a computer valued at $600 from the rear deck of a home on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The theft is under investigation.

Truck Hit

Police report that while it was parked in the parking lot at the Misty Vale Deli at 51 Berkshire Road on the morning of July 16, a town-owned 1997 Ford Ranger pickup truck driven by Gary Frenette, 48, of Woodbury was struck by an unknown motorist. The right rear corner of the Ford was damaged, police said. Police ask anyone with information about who damaged the truck to contact them at 426-5841.

Route 34 Collision

About 5:10 pm on July 15, motorist Anthony DiTommaso, 22, of Methuen, Mass., who was driving a Volkswagen Jetta eastward on Berkshire Road, stopped for traffic just east of Pole Bridge Road, police said On rounding a curve there, eastbound motorist Dorothy Miller, 78, of 26 Nunnawauk Meadows, who was driving a Dodge Caravan minivan, struck the rear end of the Volkswagen, police said.

The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported DiTomasso to Danbury Hospital for treatment of neck and back pain, police said. Police issued Miller an infraction ticket on a charge of following too closely.

Church Hill Accident

Motorist Carey Sullivan, 20, of Southbury, who was driving a 1997 Subaru Legacy Outback station wagon about 7:15 am on July 11, was exiting westbound Interstate 84 at the Exit 10 off-ramp onto westbound Church Hill Road, police said.

At that time, the Subaru was struck from behind by motorist Walter Pachniuk, 45, of Woodbury, who was driving a 1999 Saab two-door convertible, police said. Emergency medical technicians examined Sullivan at the scene for neck pain, police said.

Police said they verbally warned Pachniuk for traveling unreasonably fast.

Suspended License

Police said they stopped motorist Robert Martinez, 24, of 4 Valley View Road, on the evening of July 16 and charged him with driving while under suspension. After processing the arrest at the police station, police released Martinez on a written promise to appear in Danbury Superior Court on July 22 to answer the charge.

Mailbox Theft

Police report that sometime between 11:30 pm July 11 and 1:30 pm July 12, someone yanked a residential mailbox out of the ground at 10 Taunton Hill Road and stole it. The mailbox is black with the numeral 10 on it. Police are investigating the larceny.
