NHS Students Attends Summer Program

 ITHACA, N.Y. — Eric Fisher, a student at Newtown High School, is attending the Cornell University Summer College program this year. He joins 400 other outstanding high school juniors and seniors who are spending six weeks, June 21 through August 5, on the Cornell campus discovering what college is all about.

The Cornell University Summer College Class of 2003 features talented students from 31 states and 18 foreign countries. Students take courses for college credit and explore their career options, including law, business, biology, engineering, veterinary medicine, psychology, and the art world in specialized seminars. Students also have the opportunity to experience a “day in the life” of one of these professionals by engaging them on site. Acceptance to the program was based on academic records, standardized test scores, essay applications, and high school staff and faculty recommendations.

In addition to learning about the “real world,” Ithaca’s rural academic setting allows students to explore aspects of university life that appeal especially to them. While some may favor a more countrylike setting, others may pursue an education in a fast-moving urban environment. Do they prefer a school specialized to particular fields or an institution with a more inclusive liberal arts approach? Cornell admissions advisors are on hand to provide insights and advice on how to survive and thrive in the college admissions process.
