An original Honus Wagner tobacco card from 1909 â identical to one that was auctioned off for $1,100,000 on ebay this month â will be on display at the MCI National Sports Gallery in Washington, DC. The rare card (only about 50 are known to exist) was actually owned by Wagner himself. Wagner, a Hall of Fame shortstop with the Pittsburgh Pirates, was said to have pulled the card from circulation because he didnât want his name associated with tobacco products, but a more likely version is that he was angry for not being compensated by the American Tobacco Company for using his image.
