American Legion Highlights

The Admirals, an American Legion baseball team consisting of high school and collegiate players from Newtown, Bethel and Redding, won three games and lost five during action this past week. Game results are as follows:

Oxford 9, Admirals 3: Host Oxford broke open a close game in the sixth inning scoring five runs on five consecutive hits and went on to defeat the Legion Post 100-202 Admirals in the first game of a double header on Sunday. James Viscio went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Admirals and Dan Wogksch and Adam Geriak both went 2-for-4. Steve Fitzgerald singled, scored, and drove in a run for the Admirals.

Oxford 3, Admirals 2: In game two, Zach Taylor lost a heartbreaker. He struck out seven batters in six innings. Ken Bardelli, Steve Fitzgerald, JR Shine and Clay Caron each had two hits for the Admirals who fell to 8-11 this summer.

Waterbury 9, Admirals 6: Waterbury took advantage of five unearned runs in the second inning and went on to defeat the Admirals at Newtown High School in the first game of a double header on Saturday. James Viscio went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and scored twice for the Admirals and Dan Wogksch was 2-for-3 and scored a run. Anthony Lucia and Zach Taylor both doubled and scored.

Waterbury 7, Admirals 1: Dan Wogksch’s RBI single drove in Zach Taylor in the fourth inning for the Admirals’ only score. Steve Fitzgerald’s double and a single by Anthony Lucia were the only other hits for the Admirals.

Admirals 1, New Milford 0: Dan Wogksch struck out 14 batters and allowed only three hits in leading the Admirals past New Milford at Bethel High School on Friday night. Wogksch, a sophomore at Keene State University, did not allow a runner to reach third base and struck out the side in the first, second and fourth innings. In the sixth, Bob Manfreda doubled to right and was driven in by Clay Caron’s single. Wogksch made it stand up in the seventh with an out on a comebacker and two strikeouts. Caron went 2-for-3 for the Admirals, Anthony Lucia tripled and Zach Taylor was 1-for-2.

Admirals 10, Ansonia 4: Bob Manfreda doubled, tripled, scored three runs and drove in four as the Admirals came from behind with seven runs in the sixth inning at Ansonia on July 9. Adam Geriak was 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored and Dan Wogksch was also 2-for-4. James Viscio went the distance for the Admirals, striking out six while scattering six hits. The game was a continuation of a game suspended by rain in the fourth inning on June 30 with Ansonia leading 4-3.

Admirals 5, Ansonia 1: In the second game of the double header in Ansonia, Adam Geriak tripled twice, scored once and drove in four runs. Clay Caron threw a complete game three-hitter with five strikeouts and Corey Steven walked and singled and scored both times. Caron and Joe Fedak also singled and scored in a three-run first inning.

Ansonia 8, Admirals 3: Ansonia unleashed a 10-hit attack July 8 at Bethel. Clay Caron scored two runs and drove in another for the Admirals, and Adam Geriak was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Bob Manfreda doubled and scored for the Admirals.
