AA - #290211 A CONVERSATION WITH VIKTOR SCHREKENGOST - âSCHREKENGOSTâ GW/KC
HARTFORD, CONN. â The best know object of American art deco may be the âJazz Bowl,â produced in 1930 by the Cowan Pottery in Ohio and designed by Viktor Schrekengost. While perhaps 30 âJazz Bowlsâ exist today, Schrekengostâs other designs are ubiquitous, and have been enjoyed by millions of American families for more than 75 years. These include childrenâs pedal cars, bicycles, baby strollers, lawn mowers, as well as popular dinnerware patterns for American Limoges and for Salem China Company.
On Saturday, September 22, the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art will present âBowls, Bicycles, and Beyond: A Conversation with Viktor Schrekengost and Henry Adams,â at 11 am in The Museum Theater.
At age 95, Schrekengost continues to teach at the Cleveland Institute of Art, where he has been a faculty member since 1930. He founded the schoolâs industrial design department in 1933.
An example of Schrekengostâs âJazz Bowlâ recently entered the permanent collections of the Wadsworth Atheneum. Henry Adams, curator of American art at the Cleveland Museum of Art, was responsible for organizing the recent exhibition âViktor Schrekengost and 20th-Century Designâ and is author of the accompanying catalogue.
