The Post 100 Bethel Admirals U19 American Legion baseball team, which includes players from Newtown, capped off the regular season with a record of 21-6.

The Admirals have qualified for the state playoffs, among the top five teams in the zone, which begin on Saturday, July 18. Post 100 finished in second place and Waterbury (22-3 heading into its final two games, both on July 16) earned the top spot. Results from recent action are as follows:

Waterbury 2, Admirals 1: In an eight-inning pitcher’s duel between a pair of southpaws — the Admirals’ Mike Parker and Waterbury’s Shea Dooley — the Brass City team came out on top at Municipal Stadium on July 8. Parker’s battery-mate, Garrett Whelton-Pane, excelled behind the dish. On two squeeze plays late in the game, he endured home plate collisions and hung onto the ball. Sam Czel’s  RBI single plated the Admirals’ run in the second inning.

Waterbury 7, Admirals 0: With the exception of Michael Parker — who rifled a pair of  line-drive singles — the Admirals hitters were stymied by Waterbury ace Jamie Butler under the lights at Bethel High School, on July 9.

Admirals 6, Easton 1: Post 100 batters banged out 11 singles in support of hurler Chas Cywin, who allowed only a pair of hits in a six-inning performance at Bethel High School, on July 11. Leading the offense were Joe Liquori (3-for-4), Logan Whelton-Pane (2-for-4), and Charlie Huegi (2-for-4). Centerfielder Sam Czel made the defensive play of the game, sprinting  deep into left center field to flag down a blast off the bat of Easton slugger Jack Pantalena.

Admirals 10, Naugatuck 8: In a comeback victory at Bethel High School, on July 12, the Admirals scored eight runs on eight base hits in the fifth inning. Swinging the lumber for Post 100 were Dave Matthews (3-for-4, double, triple), Michael Parker (3-for-3, double), Charlie Huegi (2-for-4), and Garrett Whelton-Pane (2-for-3).

Admirals 5, Naugatuck 2: With the score knotted at 2-2 in the fifth inning, Jack Procaccini launched a two-run double that enabled pitcher Mike Parker to notch a key win on the road at Naugatuck High School, on July 13. Dave Matthews (2-for-3) and Jim Parker (2-for-3) continued to swing hot bats for the Admirals.

Admirals 8, Oakville 3: Jim Parker threw 6 1/3 innings of two-hit ball on a muggy, buggy night under the lights at Bethel High School, on July 14. The Admirals supported Parker with an 11-hit attack.  Multi-hit games were turned in by Sam Czel (2-for-3, two doubles), Dave Matthews (2-for-3, double), Charlie Huegi (2-for-4, double), Abe Defeo (2-for-3), and Logan Whelton-Pane (2-for-3).

Admirals 4, Prospect-Beacon Falls 1: Post 100 got a complete-game effort from Stephen Brittin. The Admirals struck for a 3-0 lead through two innings in the final regular season game, at Bethel High, on July 15.
