Nature Walks At Audubon Center

SOUTHBURY — Leisurely nature walks geared to the interests of participants will continue on Wednesdays this month at The Audubon Center at Bent of the River. Hikes on July 21 and 28 will begin at 8 am, and each will last for approximately two hours.

Led by Audubon staff members, the walks will move slowly through the sanctuary, pausing often to view birds and to focus on seasonal aspects of the center’s rich natural history.

Summer is well on the way in July.  Although the flora and fauna are constantly changing, strollers may be able to see birds raising their second brood, with the adults flitting around trying to feed hungry mouths and not paying too much attention to humans. The summer field wildflowers, butterflies and dragonflies are at their peak and a delight to watch.

The walks are aimed at people who love nature and who want to continue their lifelong learning of its beauty and wonders. More than 275 species of birds, mammals, butterflies and amphibians make their home at the Bent, which also includes a rich diversity of tree and plant life.

Bent of the River, a 650-acre site owned and managed by National Audubon Society, is at 185 East Flat Hill Road in South Britain, about a half mile from Connecticut Route 172.  The center’s historic barn is open Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm, but the grounds and trails are open to visitors seven days a week during daylight hours. Call 264-5098 for additional information.
