Just Walk, Day Or Night, With Or Without Butterflies

Burlington — The Sessions Woods Conservation Education Center is offering an ongoing public program series throughout the summer and fall at the Sessions Woods Wildlife Management Area. Directions may be obtained by calling 860-675-8130.

Saturday, July 17, at 10:30 am, a Butterfly Walk will serve as an introduction to many different types of butterflies and a “beginner’s guide” to butterfly identification. Because butterflies are sun-loving insects, prepare to spend some time in the summer sun. Participants should bring water and wear a hat.

Sunday, July 25, at 8 am, a Volksmarch, which in Germany means “people sport,” will take place with the Connecticut Valley Volkssport Club. It is a 5K (3.1 miles) or 10K (6.2 miles) walk on the trails and scenic natural areas of Sessions Woods. There are thousands of Volkssport clubs in the world, each encouraging individuals to get outdoors and walk. The Connecticut Valley Volkssport Club is sponsoring this event and invites nonmembers to attend.

Saturday, July 31, at 8 pm, there will be a Full Moon Nature Hike with Appalachian Mountain Club Hike Leader Lisa Meunier and Master Wildlife Conservationist Shirley Sutton. They will co-lead this three-mile hike along the Beaver Marsh Trail at Sessions Woods, focusing on nocturnal wildlife. This walk is suitable for adults ages 18 and over. Participants should wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring along a flashlight or headlamp. Limited space is available, so register early.

The Sessions Woods Conservation Education Center’s Public Program Series is a cooperative venture between the CT DEP Wildlife Division and the Friends of Sessions Woods. Preregister for these programs by calling 860-675-8130 (Monday–Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm). Programs are free unless noted. An adult must accompany children under 12 years old.
