Summer Theatre Connections 2002 Presents 'The Wiz'
Summer Theatre Connections 2002 Presents âThe Wizâ
Come on down to the yellow brick road and see the talent of 120 Summer Theatre Connection campers in the production of The Wiz August 2-3.
Summer Theatre Connection is entering its fourth summer at Newtown High School. It is a program funded by the Connecticut State Department of Education and coordinated by staff from Education Connection and Newtown High School. Students in seventh through 12th grade are given the opportunity to gain real experience of the value of teaching and learning through the arts.
Newtown High School Vocal Director Sabrina Post is directing the group of 120 campers in The Wiz, which is based on L. Frank Baumâs book, The Wizard of Oz. The 1975 Broadway musical adapted Mr Baumâs fairy tale with a modern setting, all-black cast, and a rock/gospel score. Since the 1970s, The Wiz has been performed by diverse casts in school, college, and local theater groups across the country. Ms Post has more than 20 years experience working on theater with students. She is assisted by college student Travis Finlayson of Newtown.
Kathleen Slanksi is the campâs producer and brings 15 years of experience with her. She is currently a producer/technical director/house manager at Joel Barlow High School. She is assisted by college student Brittany McClure of Newtown.
The summer camp is open to students throughout the region including Bethel, Brookfield, Danbury, New Fairfield, New Milford, and Newtown as well as other nearby towns. Students perform in the show, or work on set design, costumes, lighting, or sound based on their areas of interest.
