Flag Lowered To Honor Former First Selectman

The Main Street flag was lowered on Friday to pay respect to the late Zita McMahon.

Mrs McMahon, 75, who served as Newtown's First Selectman from 1989 until 1993, died on July 12, peacefully and surrounded by family. 

The widow of John Gary McMahn of Sandy Hook, Mrs McMahon was brn on December 4, 1937, in Passaci, N.J., to Joseph and Albina Wyka.

She graduated from Trinity College in Washington, D.C., and later worked as grants administrator for the Town of Newtown before becoming its First Selectman in 1989. She spent the later part of her career as human resource administrator for CES in Trumbull.

A dedicated mother and grandmother, Mrs McMahon spent 49 years of her life in Sandy Hook. She is survived by a sister, Eufrozyna Wyka of Clifton, N.J.; her daughters, Laurie, Suzanne, Amy and Melissa; sons, John and Tim; and 13 grandchildren.

Friends may call Tuesday, July 16, from 4 to 7 pm, at Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street in Newtown. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, July 17, at 11 am, in St. Rose of Lima Church, 46 Church Hill Road. Interment will follow in Newtown Village Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers donations in Mrs McMahon's name may be made to Newtown Scholarship Association, PO Box 302, Newtown CT 06470.
